CATARACT CONSULTATIONS:
The formation of cataracts is a very natural process that we all go through. The need for cataract surgery can take place early in life or much later. Regardless of when you arein need of surgery, there are many decisions that need to be made when choosing where to have your procedure done. Location of services, timing, choice of implants, choice of procedure and the desired outcomes are all factors that need to be considered. There are several things that can be done to ensure the best possible results and we are happy to go through all of these decisions with you.

CHILDREN’S VISION CARE:
Our children are often not aware there is a problem with their vision. They may have always had poor vision and think that is their normal. The majority of learning comes from our eyes and we must ensure our children can see well. BUT vision is not the only thing we need to check – we need to ensure their eyes are working together and processing the information they are taking in. This type of problem with eye teaming cannot be picked up by school screening or by a paediatrician. We start checking children’s vision at the age of 6 MONTHS.
Currently, kids are covered for most tests until the age of 19. Please bring your children in and let us make sure they are viewing the world the way you are! Don’t let poor vision hinder their learning.

COMPUTER & DIGITAL EYE STRAIN:
The reality of our world is that excessive phone and computer usage is a normal part of our daily routine. For many years, we have been helping people who suffer from eye fatigue after overuse of these digital devices AND we have been implementing preventative strategies to reduce fatigue in those who are using digital devices a lot. We have seen a dramatic decline in vision over the last decade and we have been providing solutions to help slow down the negative impact of technology.
If you are worried about how much time you spend on the computer or your phone, or are feeling fatigued or tired at the end of your day, or have strain around your eyes at the end of the day, come in and let us help you.

COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAM:
A comperehensive eye exam is a key component of your overall healthcare. It consists of two parts, a visual assessment to determine if you need correction to help you see clearer and to reduce eye fatigue, and the second is a full health evaluation of your eye from the front to the back, looking for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, holes or tears. A person who sees perfectly could still have a condition brewing that they do not feel or sense. Most eye conditions are silent until they become irreparable. Prevention and pro-active screening is the key to a life of excellent vision and eye health.
The eyes are a very small structure but are impacted by every system in body. Through an eye exam we are able to determine many visual functioning issues, ocular health conditions and systemic conditions. We have routinely diagnoses, tumors, strokes, elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid conditions, intracranial bleeds and masses that our patients were not aware of prior to seeing us. Please call our office to schedule your comprehensive eye exam today.

CONCUSSION & TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY THERAPY:
Have you suffered from a concussion or head trauma? Concussion is defined by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth, causing mechanical stretching of nerve axons (diffuse axonal injury) and disruptive biochemical changes. It is classified as Minor Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI).
Our brain dedicates 70% to vision and vision processing, and 80% of all sensory processing in the entire body is directly affected by information coming in from the eyes. Thus, it is not surprising that a concussion affects the visual system in some way.
Post-Trauma Vision Syndrome (PTVS) can impact daily function, including work, social, and recreational activities. Symptoms can vary from individual to individual, and can include any of or a combination of the following:
|
|
|
|
- Difficulty with reading, computer work, and/or scrolling on a phone
|
- Discomfort in crowded or busy areas; bothered by busy patterns
|
- Losing one’s place or re-reading the same line
|
- Reduced sense of where body is in space
|
|
- Impaired ability to process visual information
|
|
- Memory issues: difficulty recalling what was read, or seen
|
- Balance and depth perception issues
|
|
A standard examination does not reveal enough information about the complexities of visual dysfunction associated with a concussive injury. However, it is important to do the standard examination after the injury, which includes testing visual acuity, measuring a vision prescription if present, peripheral vision testing and conducting a thorough eye health examination. A Neuro-Optometric Assessment is then required to further investigate symptoms associated with PTVS to determine the treatment strategies, which include a vision rehabilitation program to re-automatize visual functions and therapeutic glasses to help improve spatial vision, visual comfort and visual stability.
There are many things we can do to help reduce the strain you are experiencing. Call us and let us help you.

CONTACT LENS FITTINGS:
Have you ever considered wearing lenses or wanting to be free of your glasses? At the gym or a special night out? Do you want to change your eye color? We have lenses for near sightedness, far sightedness, astigmatism and multifocal vision similar to your bifocal and progressive glasses. If you have once been told you could not wear lenses because of your prescription – please come in and see us. Products and technology have changed dramatically. We have options for everyone!
Remember - contact lenses are medical devices that need to be fit correctly to the shape of your eyes specifically. There are over a dozen different variables that make one brand of lenses different from another. They are not all listed on the box.
When fitting contact lenses we are looking to ensure your vision is excellent, your comfort is fantastic throughout the entire time you are wearing lenses and most importantly that the fit of your lenses do not and will not create any damage to the front of your eye.
A lens that fits too loose is uncomfortable and will move around too much. A lens that is too tight will feel comfortable mean while it is causing oxygen deprivation to the cornea and front of your eye without you knowing it!! The only way to know if a lens fits you correctly is with a microscope by a optometrist. Being taught how to use contact lenses properly is very important to prevent infections and vision threatening complications. If you have any questions always feel free to call us.

DIABETIC RETINAL EVALUATION:
Are you diabetic, pre-diabetic or classified as borderline? When your blood sugar is too high for your body to handle, the red blood cells in our vessels become coated in sharp sugar molecules, which scratch and tear the lining of the blood vessels. Blood then leaks out of the vessels and causes haemorrhaging within the body. This results in the blood not reaching the end vessels, extremities like fingers and toes and organs that are furthest from the pumping heart. We are able to look at how your blood vessels are working by dilating your pupils and looking at your circulatory system in the eyes. This gives us a snap shot of what is happening throughout the body. We can see if your blood sugar level is too high, causing bleeding throughout the body. Together with your internist, we can help you manage your diabetes. You should have your eyes dilated once a year when you have, or suspect you have diabetes. Diabetes can also cause early cataracts. While your eyes are dilated we can look for these lenticular changes as well. Your vision can fluctuate when your blood sugar goes up and down. Stable blood sugar is crucial to proper vision.

DRY EYE ASSESSMENT & MANAGEMENT:
Do your eyes feel dry? Do they itch, burn, sting, hurt or feel like something is in them? Do your eyes water? Does your vision fluctuate when you blink? Dry Eye Disease is very common and it is the number one condition that we see in our office that impacts vision. Dry Eye Disease is a vision threatening condition that is becoming more prevalent with the use of contact lenses, computers, smart phones and digital devices. Tears are hormone regulated and we do not produce as many tears as we age. Women unfortunately deal with dryness of the eyes more than men do, and it does tend to get worse when left untreated. Treating dry eyes is much more than adding moisture drops to the eyes. There are many pathways to determine what is causing your dry eye symptoms and in turn, many treatment modalities that are present to help you.
Our office is proud to offer a full suite of diagnostic tests to determine your form of dryness and we are able to customize a treatment plan to help you reduce your symptoms and stop worrying about your eyes.

EYE LID & LASHES CLEANING:
We often don’t think about washing the area around our eyes and have been told to keep all things awayfrom our eyes. We need to change this form of thought because our eyelashes are just like our hair and they need to be washed regularly. The unfortunate consequence of not cleaning the eyelashes is a bacterial build up on the lashes and lids known as blepharitis. Mites and bugs can live on our lashes and it's important to get them checked and cleaned if present.
We are proud to have been the first office in Toronto to have brought the best treatment for lids and lashes - Blephex. Routine cleaning with Blephex will help maintain a clean lid margin and ocular surface, preventing the build-up of debris, bacteria and mites.
Our staff are certified lid hygienists and well trained to provide this service to you.

EYE PRINT PROSTHETIC
The EyePrintPRO™ is a prosthetic scleral cover shell, which improves vision by creating a new, smooth, refractive surface for the eye. Like a fingerprint, it is unique to each individual, made from the highest quality materials to ensure safe, healthy wearing.
It is indicated for keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, ocular surface disease (dry eye), trauma, extreme cases of deformed eyes, pellucid marginal degeneration, chemical burns, post surgical corneas (including corneal transplants and post LASIK ectasia), pinguecula, pterygium, stem cell failure, or simply those who desire better vision and comfort.
It starts with an impression of the eye, which only takes a few minutes to capture the precise curvature and details of your eye. This process provides details of the ocular surface never recognized before. There are no fudge factors or guessing and an exact match is achieved to each cornea and sclera.

FLASHES & FLOATERS EVALUATION:
This is considered an emergency. If you see flashes of light in your eyes or new floaters please call our office immediately and tell the optometric staff what you are experiencing. A flash of light is white light that looks like a birthday sparkler inside the eye. A floater is a grey or black image that you see in your vision that is best seen in a bright environment. If you experience any of these please be seen immediately. They could be an indication that your retina is detaching, has a tear or hole, or is in jeopardy of these things occurring.

GENETIC TESTING:
We are pleased to offer genetic testing for our patients who are interested in determining their risk of macular degeneration. This test is performed through a simple cheek swab. Macular degeneration can progress to a more advanced form that causes vision loss. This is known as wet macular degeneration. The purpose of this test is to determine if you are at risk of developing wet macular degeneration over the course of your life and your 10 year risk of developing it. There are also variations of treatments for dry and wet macular degeneration and this genetic test will determine which treatment course is right for you. Some treatments work against you and can cause you to advance faster with them.
This test is recommended for those who have macular degeneration or a family history of it. When we know what we are dealing with, we can help you reduce your risk of progression.

GLAUCOMA DETECTION, PREVENTION & TREATMENT:
Glaucoma is the silent disease that takes away your vision without any warning or symptoms. Glaucoma is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, resulting in loss of peripheral vision. Unfortunately, you cannot feel if glaucoma is present and you often do not know that you are losing peripheral vision until you have lost a significant portion of it. With the technology, scans and tests available these days, there is no reason for anyone to lose vision from glaucoma. We use many aspects of data collection to look for trends to determine if you are at risk of developing glaucoma and thus, at risk of losing vision later in life. The sooner we can determine if you are at risk, the sooner we can treat you to slow down and prevent vision loss from taking place.
We are highly trained to be able to detect, monitor and treat glaucoma if the need arises. If you or anyone in your family currently has glaucoma, please come in to be checked and see what your risk level is.

KERATOCONUS DETECTION & MANAGEMENT:
Keratoconus is a condition of the front surface of the eye resulting in irregular vision. Light coming into the eye does not bend uniformly across the cornea because of this irregular shape, resulting in vision distortion, halos, glare, poor vision with glasses and contact lenses. There are new strategies and techniques that we have been studying to provide keratoconic patients with the best possible vision. Our goal is to help you avoid surgery and corneal transplants through the fitting of specialty contact lenses. These lenses give a new shape to the front of the eye allowing light to bend properly and uniformly across the cornea.
We have been studying these special lenses since 2005 and would love the chance to help you reach your vision potential.

MACULAR DEGENERATION DETECTION, PREVENTION & TREATMENT:
Macular degeneration is often ignored until vision loss is present. We take a very different approach to the treatment and prevention of this devastating condition. Early macular degeneration can progress to dry macular degeneration which moves on to the most devastating form – wet macular degeneration. Wet macular degeneration is the form where the retina is so damaged that vision loss occurs. When this damage occurs, it is very difficult to return to a disease free state. Injections and medications are used to slow down the inevitable vision loss, but in our opinion, that is too late.
With wonderful new technology, we can look for early signs of change. Change is the indicator that vision loss may be in your future. We have developed protocols to reduce this rate of change and have shown repeatedly that we are able to reverse the impacts of macular degeneration. Our goal is to never have you lose vision from this disease and to never need injections to help re-absorb blood that is present from wet form of macular degeneration. We are able to monitor the retina for change and any change to the retinal structure is worth considering treatment in the form of proper vitamin protocols.
If you have a family history of macular degeneration and are at risk, please have your retina evaluated and your risk assessed. No one needs to lose their vision from this condition with the technology and protocols available today.

MYOPIA CONTROL:
Myopia Control is an area of Optometry that is under utilized and not discussed enough with patients. Parents with high prescriptions have the ability to prevent their children from having the same fate as them. Life with lower levels of myopia provides easier refractive solutions, less expensive refractive solutions in the form of less expensive lenses for glasses and the biggest advantage is a reduction in the risk of myopic retinal detachments.
A patient with a high level of myopia is at a higher risk level for developing many conditions that include: posterior vitreous detachments, retinal detachments, retinal tears and retinal holes, retinal atrophy, lattice degeneration, lacquer cracks and new blood vessel growth at the macula and glaucoma. The risk of these conditions developing increases as myopia progresses. By slowing down the progression of myopia we also slow down the risk of developing these conditions. Please call our office today to set up a consultation to determine if Myopia Control protocols are right for your child.

ORTHOKERATOLOGY:
Orthokeratology is a non-surgical method in which contact lenses are worn at night to re-shape the cornea to reduce the presence of myopia. This is a non invasive, non surgical, non-permanent form of the well known laser procedure – LASIK. The cornea is reshaped, as with LASIK, but it is done with the assistance of contact lenses that are worn at night, like a retainer is used for aligning teeth. These contact lens retainers are removed in the morning and you are able to enjoy clear crisp vision throughout the day. The lenses are replaced at night to ensure the next day’s results. This is a great option for active children that do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day.
Orthokeratology is also a form of myopia control. It not only helps reduce the current prescription of myopia but it also slows down the future progression of myopia, thus reducing the risk for the many conditions that result from high myopia. If you have a family history of high myopia or retinal detachments, you should consider this treatment to help reduce your risks.

PROSTHETIC CONTACT LENSES:
Prosthetic contact lenses are more than just coloured lenses. They are often used to repair damage caused by accidents and injuries, post surgery complications or birth defects that impact vision. Problems with the iris can result in large pupils that can create halos, glare, double vision and intense light sensitivity. We are able to cover scars and match one eye to the the other. We have been fitting prosthetic lenses of various sizes for many years and are here to help. It can often be very difficult to start the conversation of being fit with a prosthetic but we are here to guide you through the process.

SCLERAL LENSES & GAS PERMEABLE LENSES:
Gas Permeable contact lenses are custom made contact lenses that sit on the cornea. They are a solid contact lens and can provide much crisper vision than your traditional soft lenses. They are designed to help those with high prescriptions, lots of astigmatism and corneal irregularities. They allow lots of air and moisture to reach the cornea and are very safe. They are also available in multifocal contact lenses. When patients are not able to wear soft contact lenses, these may be the right option for them.
Scleral lenses are large-diameter gas permeable contact lenses specially designed to vault over the entire cornealsurface and rest on the "white" of the eye (the sclera). In doing so, these specialty contact lenses are able to hold a tear reservoir, which continuously “bathes” the surface of the eye. This tear reservoir helps to heal the surface of the eye in conditions where the ocular surface is damaged. It also serves to create a new optical surface, which provides a crisp, clear, superior vision beyond what glasses and soft contact lenses can provide and are more comfortable than gas permeable lenses.
Scleral lenses are commonly used to improve vision and comfort in those with:
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
- Double vision and glare issues
|
- Trauma to the front of the eye
|
|
- Scarring causing loss of vision
|
- High levels of astigmatism
|
Scleral lenses are custom-made specialty lenses. The fitting process includes a series of careful measurements of the curvature of the entire cornea, trying of several lenses of different sizes, scans with the lenses on and calculations to determine the final prescription. The entire process will require several visits and lens modifications, which is unique to each candidate based on their eye’s complexity. When fit successfully, the scleral lens, even though larger than the average contact lens, is much more comfortable. The results have been incredible and we look forward to finding the right fit for you!
